Carbon fiber prepreg is a key intermediate material for manufacturing high-performance composites, widely used in aerospace, automotive, sports equipment and other fields. Its shelf life and performance stability are closely related to storage conditions, as improper storage will lead to premature resin curing, reduced adhesion and decreased mechanical properties. Below is a detailed introduction to its typical shelf life and standard storage requirements.
Typical Shelf Life of Carbon Fiber Prepreg
The shelf life of carbon fiber prepreg is mainly determined by its resin system, curing type and storage temperature, and there are obvious differences under different storage conditions. It is generally divided into cold storage shelf life and room temperature active life.
1. Cold storage shelf life (standard storage condition): The standard cold storage temperature is usually -18℃, and the shelf life is about 6 to 12 months from the production date. For special military and aerospace-grade products, the storage temperature needs to be strictly controlled at -18℃, and the shelf life can reach 12 months under strict sealed conditions. If stored at -15℃ to -10℃, the shelf life is slightly shortened, generally 6 to 9 months; if stored at 0℃, the shelf life is about 3 months.
2. Room temperature active life: At room temperature (23℃ to 25℃), the prepreg’s resin will gradually cure, so its active life is relatively short. Generally, it can only be stored for 20 to 30 days at 25℃, and the specific time varies according to the resin formula. This period refers to the time when the prepreg can maintain proper adhesion and operability at room temperature, beyond which it will be difficult to lay and form.
Standard Storage Requirements for Carbon Fiber Prepreg
To ensure the performance of carbon fiber prepreg during storage, strict control of storage environment, packaging and handling is required, focusing on the following aspects:
1. Temperature control: Low-temperature storage is the core requirement. The ideal storage temperature is -18℃, and it can also be stored at -15℃ to -10℃ for general industrial use, but long-term storage at temperatures above 0℃ should be avoided. It is strictly prohibited to store in high-temperature environments above 30℃, as high temperature will accelerate resin curing and make the prepreg invalid in advance.
2. Humidity and sealing: The storage environment should be dry, with relative humidity controlled below 60% to prevent moisture from entering and affecting the bonding performance of resin and carbon fiber. The prepreg must be kept in a sealed moisture-proof polyethylene package during storage; if the package is damaged, it should be sealed again in time or replaced with a new package, and desiccants can be added if necessary to enhance moisture-proof effect.
3. Light and pollution prevention: The storage area should be away from direct sunlight and ultraviolet radiation, because ultraviolet rays will damage the molecular structure of the resin and carbon fiber, reducing the material performance. At the same time, it should be stored separately from oil, chemical reagents and sharp objects to avoid contamination and physical damage to the prepreg surface.
4. Handling and thawing: When moving the prepreg, avoid violent collision and extrusion to prevent damage to the fiber structure. Before use, the sealed prepreg should be thawed at room temperature until it reaches room temperature (the thawing time may take 24 to 48 hours depending on the package size) to avoid condensation of moisture on the surface due to sudden temperature changes.
In summary, the shelf life of carbon fiber prepreg is closely related to storage temperature, and strict compliance with low-temperature, sealed, dry and light-proof storage requirements is the key to ensuring its performance. It is recommended to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for storage and use, and adopt the "first-in-first-out" principle to avoid waste caused by expiration.
