What is Pre-oxidized Fiber? What is its core definition?

Pre-oxidized fiber (also called stabilized fiber) is a critical intermediate product in the industrial production of carbon fiber, formed by subjecting carbon fiber precursor filaments to a controlled high-temperature oxidation process (pre-oxidation).

Core Definition

Pre-oxidized fiber refers to the thermoset fibrous material obtained by heating organic precursor filaments (mainly polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based, pitch-based, or rayon-based filaments) in an oxidizing atmosphere (usually air) at a temperature of 200–300°C, triggering a series of chemical reactions (cyclization, dehydrogenation, oxidation cross-linking) to transform the original thermoplastic precursor into a non-melting, structurally stable fiber.

Key Characteristics Linked to the Definition

  1. Structural Transformation: The linear, thermoplastic molecular chains of the precursor are converted into a rigid, three-dimensional cross-linked network structure. This eliminates the precursor’s tendency to melt or stick together during subsequent high-temperature carbonization (1000–1500°C) and graphitization (2000–3000°C).

  2. Chemical Stability: A large number of conjugated double bonds and oxygen-containing functional groups are formed on the fiber surface, which enhance the fiber’s thermal stability and lay the foundation for the high carbon content and mechanical strength of the final carbon fiber.

  3. Process Transition Role: Pre-oxidized fiber acts as a "bridge" between the precursor and final carbon fiber—it retains the filamentary shape of the precursor while gaining the heat resistance needed to withstand extreme temperatures in subsequent carbon fiber production steps.

Core Purpose of Pre-oxidized Fiber in Carbon Fiber Production

It solves the core problem of carbon fiber manufacturing: preventing precursor filaments from melting and decomposing during high-temperature carbonization, ensuring the formation of high-strength, high-modulus carbon fiber with a continuous, oriented structure.
